P.E.
Intent
At Stourfield Infant School we pride ourselves on the holistic development of each and every child through P.E and sport. We are a school that whole heartily strives to provide the best sporting opportunities for all children in unique and innovative ways. We are a school that places a great deal of importance on P.E and the impact it has on the personal development of children. At Stourfield we offer a diverse and broad curriculum with vast opportunities to enhance the curriculum provision and inspire children outside of the classrooms. This enables children to develop their fundamental movement skills and increase their competence, confidence and develop a passion for sport and physical activity.
At Stourfield Infant School we strive to achieve this in the following ways –
- The P.E curriculum and high quality delivery by teachers provides children with the opportunity to develop fundamental movement skills, locomotor skills and ball skills as a solid foundation to enable children to participate, compete and excel in a broad range of sports.
- At Stourfield Infant School we aim to provide all children with the opportunity to attend sporting festivals, competitions and events by the time they leave Stourfield Infants. These opportunities provide a great platform for children to develop skills further, excel and continue developing a lifelong love of sport.
- We wholeheartedly believe in creating inspirational moments and giving our children new and innovative opportunities to be active and develop a love of sport. We aim to bring sport to life for our children by inviting local sports stars, clubs and companies into school to provide the children with a broad P.E and sport provision.
At Stourfield Infant School children enjoy 2 hours of curriculum P.E lessons per week. We use Complete P.E as a tool to enable us to deliver high quality P.E lessons with lesson aims linking to the national curriculum. Complete P.E is tool that enable staff to ensure children experience a wealth of opportunities to develop their physical movement and holistic development by participating in progressive activities that are designed to inspire and engage children.
Early Years Foundation Stage
The new EYFS Framework lists physical development as one of its prime areas of learning and makes some specific Early Learning Goal links to physical development.
Physical activity is vital in the development of young children to enable them to lead happy, healthy and active lives. Gross and fine motor experiences develop incrementally throughout early childhood, starting with sensory explorations and the development of a child’s strength, co-ordination and positional awareness through tummy time, crawling and play movement with both objects and adults. By creating games and providing opportunities for play both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being. Fine motor control and precision helps with hand-eye co-ordination, which is later linked to early literacy.
